Preferred Distro for Slash?

Justin Mazzi writes "Those of use eager to install slashcode come across what I would assume to be a common question. What is the best distro for running slashcode? Install seems possible on many different systems, but I'm looking for the best/most compatible." I think once you have the AMP installed the exact flavor of L doesn't much matter, but feel free to share positive/negative experiences.

    I tried hard to get Slash to install on Fedora Core 3 (maybe even 2) without success. Debian was a breeze - just run the script in the install folder and everything installs automagically as you answer a few questions.
    Of course, as they say, YMMV.
  • I don't know about a favorite, but I tried it on openbsd and it was a pain. I eventually had it working, but the whoe process was such a pain I decided to go back to freebsd where I assume it's going to be easier. I guess I'll find out.
  • redhat/fedora and OSX have all worked very well for me.

  • I'm not too sure how relevant it is to "today's slash" but last year I installed very painlessly following the instructions at http://www.installslash.org [installslash.org] on FC3
  • Hey all, my slash site is on Fedora, FC4, it's a pre-CSS CVS version that I've maintained across Redhat/FC1/FC2/FC3/FC4. I'm really itching to go CSS, anyone have installation/upgrade experience with that on a specific distro?

  • I ended up going with CentOS 4 [centos.org] which worked quite well. Once i had all the perl mods installed, everything was pretty cut and dry.
  • FreeBSD. Been running it for almost 6 years now. Simple, and stable.

    I couldn't get it to work at all. Why isn't there an automated script to do the installation? The instructions had me modifiying files by hand for days.

    Penix, the best Linux distro out there. It may be the hardest to set up, and the longest, but it's the best. Penix for you, Penix for your mother, massive Penix for everyone.
